Shōki Comes to Life from a Hanging Scroll

Shūōsai Japanese

Not on view

Shōki, the demon-queller, comes to life and emerges from a hanging scroll. He menaces a little demon (oni) with his raised sword, while another gleefully escapes to the back of the netsuke. Images of Shōki were thought to ward off demons.
